Deuteronomy 28:2, "And all these blessings shall come upon thee, and overtake thee,
if thou shalt hearken unto the voice of the Lord thy God."

We are living in a day of increasing uncertainty. Our republic is in serious trouble
morally, academically, but especially in the area of economics. During these times
of stress and concern, it is always beneficial for us to revisit passages that deal
with national blessing and cursing. Deuteronomy 28 is one passage that informs us
what would cause God to bless or curse the nation of Israel. As in the days of the
children of Israel, there are reasons why God would bless or curse our nation. Though
times and cultures change, God never changes. "I am the LORD; I change not" (Malachi
3:6). In generations past God has blessed obedience and cursed disobedience, and
God's methods are still the same today. It can still be accurately stated in 2011
that, "Righteousness exalteth a nation, but sin is a reproach to any people" (Proverbs
14:34).

When God pours out his blessing, it affects every part of a nation, community, church,
or family. God had blessed the nation in the days of David, Solomon, and Rehoboam,
and this blessing was not just spiritual or rhetoric. God's blessing on them spilled
into every area of their lives, including the financial area. Without money you
cannot experience prosperity in the fullest sense. Without prosperity you cannot
fulfill the Great Commission. Executing the work of God requires that we be prosperous,
and prosperity means having money.

Prosperity is closely tied to our personal relationship with God. A close, personal,
and intimate walk with the Lord is the beginning of true prosperity. The book of
Psalms begins with the word: "Blessed," and the theme of blessedness or prosperity
is followed through the whole book. The sermon Jesus preached on the mount begins
the same way: "Blessed are..." because God wants to bless every one of us. He is
a good, kind, and generous God who is capable of keeping every commitment He makes
and performing every promise He makes. But there are certain actions we can take
that will invoke the displeasure of God, causing us to forfeit His blessing for
a curse in our lives. Notice three such actions from Deuteronomy chapter 28.

When we forsake the Lord and commit wickedness, we trade blessing for a curse. God
cannot prosper and bless us in our efforts if we are involved in wickedness in our
lives. God clearly warned: "The Lord shall send upon thee cursing, vexation, and
rebuke, in all that thou settest thine hand unto for to do, until thou be destroyed,
and until thou perish quickly; BECAUSE OF THE WICKEDNESS OF THY DOINGS, whereby
thou hast forsaken me" (Deuteronomy 28:20). When we find ourselves putting our wages
into a bag with holes, it is time to consider our ways, whether or not they are
pleasing in the sight of God. Be willing to pray: "see if there be any wicked way
in me." When God shows you what is keeping back His blessing, be willing to say,
"lead me in the way everlasting" (Psalm 139:24).

When we don't hearken to the voice of God, we trade blessing for a curse. When God
speaks to us through His word, He wants us to do more than listen: He wants us to
hearken. Hearing is at the root of hearkening, but they are two different responses.
To hear means to listen or acknowledge. To hearken means to respond in submission.
When the doorbell rings, everyone in the house hears it, but only the person who
opens the door is hearkening to it. Many of us hear the voice of God, but simply
hearing it will not please God. We must hearken or else this will be said of us:
"Moreover all these curses shall come upon thee, and shall pursue thee, and overtake
thee, till thou be destroyed; BECAUSE THOU HEARKENEDST NOT UNTO THE VOICE OF THE
LORD THY GOD" (Deuteronomy 28:45). How do you respond to God's voice? Do you merely
hear Him? Or do you willingly hearken to His requests?

When we don't serve God with joyfulness, we trade blessing for a curse. A griping
employee is never pleasant to be around, and they usually drain the life out of
others. It is not be characteristic of God's people to be sad. Christians should
not be known as complainers, but should be the happiest people alive. Notice why
God's blessing was withheld. It was "BECAUSE THOU SERVEDST NOT THY GOD WITH JOYFULNESS,
and with gladness of heart, for the abundance of all things" (Deuteronomy 28:47).
God had blessed them extravagantly, and they refused to "serve the Lord with gladness"
(Psalm 100:2). So they forfeited the blessing and received the curse. Does genuine
joy radiate from your life and countenance?

What is the real problem at the root of our willingness to commit these actions
and knowingly forfeit the blessing of God in our lives? The real problem is found
in verse 52, "And he shall besiege thee in all thy gates, until thy high and fenced
walls come down, WHEREIN THOU TRUSTEDST." They had put their trust in their manmade
structures and refused to rely on God. So, what is the solution to these problems?
How do we escape God's curse and ensure God's blessing? How do we apply for true
prosperity, while avoiding poverty? The Answer Is In Your Wallet!! 'IN GOD WE
TRUST' was printed on every piece on American currency as a reminder that our reliance
should always be upon God.

We can trust God to keep us from committing wickedness against Him, knowing that
we are "kept by the power of God through faith unto salvation" (I Peter 1:5). We
can trust God that when we hearken to His voice, He will honor our obedience with
blessing. We can trust God to fill us with His joy and produce real contentment
in us. The next time you pull out your wallet, be reminded that it contains the
answer to all of life's questions as well as the key to unlock the blessing of God.
"Trust in the Lord with all thine heart, and lean not unto thine own understanding.
In all thy ways acknowledge him, and he shall direct thy paths" (Proverbs 3:5-6).
