The Danger of Withdrawal
Buddy T
From Buddy T, your Guide to Alcoholism
The main reason that people who want to quit drinking or doing drugs are encouraged not to try to do it "on their own" is the potential dangers of withdrawal. Because each individual is different, there is no way to predict if someone's withdrawals will be mild or severe.

Severe withdrawal symptoms can be much more than unpleasant. They can be fatal.

Alcohol and Drug Withdrawals
Alcohol Withdrawal
When someone who has become "alcohol dependent" decides to stop drinking, he will experience some level of physical discomfort. For this reason, it is extremely difficult for him to merely stop drinking "on his own" without assistance and support.

The Range of Withdrawal Symptoms
There is no way to predict how any individual will respond to quitting. Not everyone who stops drinking or drugging have withdrawal symptoms, but most people do experience some symptoms, which can be severe.

What Are the DTs?
Delirium tremens (DTs) is the most severe form of withdrawal. It involves profound confusion, hallucinations, and severe autonomic nervous system overactivity, typically beginning 48 to 96 hours after the last drink.
