From Buddy T, your Guide to Alcoholism
Also during this stage of your recovery, you will learn to put the tools that you learned in early abstinence to use in other areas of your life, so that you can continue to live a truly sober lifestyle. You will learn new coping skills and tools to help you deal with many different aspects of life.
Tools for Maintaining Abstience
Developing Healthy Relationships
Avoiding your former drinking buddies or drug-using friends is a key step in maintaining your recovery, but it doesn't stop there. Developing new positive friendships with people who can support your recovery efforts can be even more important.

Developing a Drug-Free Lifestyle
If you are trying to maintain abstinence from alcohol or drugs over a long period of time, it is important to develop a drug-free lifestyle in all aspects of your life -- at home, at work and during your leisure hours.

Dealing With the Past
As you reach the stage in your recovery of trying to maintain long-term abstinence, it is important that you deal with your feelings of guilt and shame or lack of self-esteem. Allowing these feelings to fester can easily drive you back to drinking or drugging to escape the pain.

Managing Anger
It is important that you learn how to recognize your anger and express it appropriately, rather than allow it to jeopardize your recovery. Anger is a normal and natural human emotion; how you handle your anger makes the difference.
