You think Lindsay Lohan has been having a very public meltdown?

British singer Amy Winehouse has once again given LiLo some serious competition.

A warning: Perez Hilton's gossip site (http://perezhilton.com) is part of this story and it may not be safe for viewing at work. Plus, the photos that you may find with this incident may not be the type you'd want to see while nibbling on your turkey sandwich at your cubicle. I'm just looking out for your best interest.

So, here we go:

The people: Winehouse and husband Blake Fielder-Civil, who have been in and out of rehab in the last few weeks for their drug and alcohol problems.

The incident: Early Thursday morning, London police were called to a hotel after guests reported hearing a nasty fight in one of the rooms, according to the U.K.'s Daily Mail (www.dailymail.co.uk). Turns out the fighting noises were coming from Winehouse's room. At some point, she runs out of the hotel, with Fielder-Civil in pursuit, when . . .

The photos: Photographers got shots of the couple after they spilled out onto the street. The photos show each of them bloodied and bruised. Her makeup is smeared, she has a bloody tear on her jeans; his face is scratched and bleeding. Oh, and amid the fighting, chasing and bleeding, Winehouse stopped into a store to buy some cigarettes.

The Daily Mail has photos and a story posted on its Web site, if you're interested. Again, be

warned, they're not pretty. (Except for the photo of Winehouse from 2003, in which she looks healthy and well.) After what definitely seemed like a rough night, you'd think they'd be on the down low, right? Then again . . .

The next day: The couple were photographed on the streets of London - arm in arm and cleaned up - throughout Thursday and into Friday early morning.

So, what the heck happened? Apparently, Winehouse was eager to explain . . .

The explanation: In times of crisis, some celebrities turn to publicists to issue statements. Not Winehouse. She sent several text messages to blogger Hilton to explain herself this morning.

"I was cutting myself after he found me in our room about to do drugs with a call girl and rightly said I wasn't good enough for him. I lost it and he saved my life," she said to Perez.

I'll leave you to make your own conclusions. But my colleague may have said it best: "She's going to end up dead soon."
