Summer romance movies can include romantic comedies and more serious romantic drama movies. 1. Australia (2008). Of course, this summer romance movie takes place somewhere other than the United States, in Australia. Hugh Jackman and Nicole Kidman make for a very passionate movie in a foreign country. Australia is about a woman who travels to Australia from England, to find out why her husband is not coming home. They own land there. What she finds is that her husband has been killed, and that her land is at risk. She comes up with a solution, but needs the help of loner guy Hugh Jackman's character, the Drover. Well, of course, the sexual tension between the two of them heats up, with her stubborn ways and his loner character. Will they end up together or apart? Put this movie under the category of romantic summer drama.
2. Couples Retreat (2009). Any movie with Vince Vaughn ends up being a funny movie, so you can already imagine that this is a romantic comedy. Jason Bateman also stars. In Couples Retreat, four couples go to an island resort. Three of the couples are there just to have a good time, but the couple who invited them were going to work on their marriage. The other three couples don't realize it yet, but they're in for some hard core counseling themselves, counseling they didn't even know they needed. Hey, what about the fun they were promised?
3. Under the Tuscan Sun (2003). Diane Lane stars as a recently divorced woman whose friends talk her into taking a trip to Italy to get over the fact that her husband had cheated on her and start anew. While on the trip, she sees this beautiful villa and decides to buy it. It needs lots of work, and the story unfolds as she fixes up the villa and meets Italian people. The movie only shortly brings a romance interest into the picture for Diane Lane's character. So, why then is this a summer must-see romance movie? Another romance blooms with some of the Italian friends she meets, so one of the subplots is very romantic. But also, romance can be about more than just a man and woman getting together. It can also be about the romance of a villa being remodeled and the beauty of the land under the tuscan sun in Italy. The Italian countryside itself is romantic, just to see the sun set in this foreign country. At the end of the movie, a new romance blossoms for her, but she really had all the romance she needed without it. Watch the movie and you'll understand.
4. The Blue Lagoon (1980). Brooke Shields at age fourteen stars in this island movie with Christopher Atkins at what some might say is too young of an age for being part of the sexual content in this summer flick. Brooke and Christopher's characters are shipwrecked on a deserted island, and they must survive. They soon learn about sexuality on their own, and end up having a baby. They don't want to leave the island, so let a ship pass by without finding them. However, a misfortune occurs when they go out on a small boat they found, and lose the oars. They can't get back to the island because of a circling shark. Once out to sea, they eat some berries that were in the boat that might be poisonous. Will they survive? Will their baby survive? This summer movie is romantic because we see two people falling in love that have spent time together. It's as if it was meant to be. If they had been in civilization, they may not have had the chance to foster such a deep, undying love.
5. Return to Blue Lagoon (1991). Well, just when you think things couldn't get any hotter than Brooke Shields on a desert island, along comes Milla Jovovich. She has some piercing blue eyes that could melt any guy's heart. This movie takes place where the last one left off. It turns out that only the child survives when the boat carrying Brooke Shields and Christopher Atkins is discovered at sea. Another shipwreck occurs, and this boy, along with a mother and her daughter, end up back on the same island. However, the mother ends up dying, because she braved the elements to build a place for the children to live. The children are safe, and grow up together on the island. Of course they fall in love, and Milla Jovovich finds herself pregnant just like the young Brooke Shields did in the first movie. A ship comes, and at first they want to be rescued, but they decide against it, wanting to remain on the romantic desert island. Both of these movies are perfect summer romance movies.
6. The Wedding Date (2005). Debra Messing has to go back home to London to be in her sister's wedding. However, she doesn't want to go alone because she knows she will run into her ex-fiance'. She has to come up with a plan, and so she hires a wedding date. Well, this guy is perfect for her, stubborn, and unwilling to put up with her crap. This is just what she needed. Will she ruin it, or allow herself to fall in love with him and trust a man again?
7. Before Sunrise (1995). So what happens when you only have one night to spend together? This is the plot of Before Sunrise, a romantic summer movie that takes place in Vienna, Austria. Think about what you would do if you only thought you had one night to get to know someone. You would tell them everything, share your deepest secrets. But then, think of how close you would bond. So, once you have fallen in love in one night, do you dare try to see each other again, or just let it go? This is a great setting for a romance, with only spending one evening together. This to me is the epitome of a romance scene. Now, don't get me wrong, everlasting love is what we all want, but if you can't have that, one night with someone truly special is certainly better than never feeling love in at all.
8. Sex and the City 2 (2010). Of course, a movie about sex is going to make the top ten list for summer romance movies. Sex and the City 2 falls under the foreign summer romance category because the four girls decide to take a trip to Abu Dhabi in the Middle East. Why is it romantic? Three couples find ways to work through their issues during the movie. Three of the four ladies, including Carrie, Charlotte and Miranda, are all now married. Each of their marriages are experiencing some problems. Leave it to a trip to help them all figure out what to do. The only thing I don't like about this is that Samantha still hasn't ended up with her younger guy, Smith. I hope there is a third Sex and the City movie, where they reunite the two of them.
9. The English Patient (1996). Forbidden love always ends up part of romantic movies. Imagine a married woman who falls for another. She didn't mean for it to happen, but here it is. Passion sometimes takes precedence over loyalty, and she ends up feeling very bad about it. The two lovers find themself stranded with her injured, and the man has to leave her to go get help. Of course, she ends up dying alone in the cave where he had to leave her. Why? Hegets seriously injured going to seek help and never gets back to her. The movie is about him telling his story of their love to his nurse who is helping him recover. Interestingly enough, the nurse finds a romance of her own in this movie, making for a second very romantic subplot. The movie is set during World War II.
10. Nowhere in Africa (2001). This foreign summer romance movie is also in German, so if you don't mind subtitles, this is a great romantic foreign country flick. Imagine a couple with a child who want to protect the family from the Nazis, since they are Jewish. They go to Kenya, and build a life for themselves there. This movie is romantic because the couple are faced with many challenges, and have to work through them to save their family and stay together. Will they ever see their homeland again, and do they want to?
