Rehab unit plan sparks controversy

18 May 2007

PETITIONS for and against a controversial application to turn a guest house into a drug and rehabilitation unit were handed over to Waveney District Council this week.

The former Albany Guest House building in London Road South, Kirkley, is the subject of a plan from Lester Morse to convert the eight-room building into a new rehab centre.

Letters of objection and those in favour of the facility were submitted to the council this week, prior to the Tuesday deadline, with the proposal receiving support from the nearby London Road Baptist Church.

Backing the proposal, concerned Journal reader Valerie George called on people to give the centre a chance.

"As soon as someone wants to help rid this town of drugs, they are immediately hindered by complaints and the usual nimby attitude," she said.

"There is very little readily accessible help in this town, so if you think that having a rehab on your doorstep endangers your home or family, please be very careful when you walk around town, because on the street you will find addicts walking about, without the shelter of a rehab," said Mrs George, of Carlton Coville.

The Journal understands that if Waveney does allow the scheme to go-ahead, then the facility would offer accommodation for 12 residents who are coming off drugs and alcohol for about 12 weeks.

Despite those in favour of the scheme, widespread objections and anger were expressed this week as outraged residents, likely to be affected if the application is approved, met Kirkley councillor David Young.

Mr Young said: "Since The Journal announced this application last week I have received a lot of complaints from worried residents.

"Although the aims of this application appear to be very laudable, their overall activities seem to go beyond that of just drug and alcohol rehabilitation.

"A centre offering refuge to a large number of individuals, who perhaps have serious social problems, surely cannot be beneficial for Kirkley as a whole."

Mr Young also revealed that he had lobbied an objection with the council.
