Lumley returns to modelling roots

British actress Joanna Lumley has modelled a gold-and-diamond necklace shaped like a tiger to boost awareness of an auction to raise funds for an animal charity.

The Absolutely Fabulous star has been snapped wearing the Shere Khan Necklace, which is to be put under the hammer for the Born Free Foundation, which hopes to raise a mammoth $480,000 (£300,000) to help save the wild tiger from extinction.

Lumley says, '"I feel very much that it's almost a royal piece. The necklace is so special it can be worn with anything, though I feel a strapless evening gown and long evening gloves would show it to perfection. The moment you put the necklace on, it comes alive!

"It feels great, like a badge of office, but it's incredibly comfortable and easy to wear. It reminds me of the fabulous pieces in the Duchess of Windsor's collection - panthers and leopards. I adore extreme looks and this is blingtastic!"

The piece, which consists of 182 diamonds and gemstones set in an 18ct gold tiger, will go up for sale at a gala at London's Savoy Hotel on 17 June to mark the 80th birthday of actress and Born Free founder Virginia McKenna, who starred in the famous 1966 film of the same name.

Lagy Gaga bankrupt

Lady Gaga 'bankrupt' from tour

Lady Gaga claims she 'went bankrupt' during her 'Monster Ball' world tour.
Despite the 'Hair' hitmaker grossing an estimated $125 million from her huge 200-performance show at one point the production had cost her so much to stage - with its elaborate costumes and backing dancers - she had spent more money than had been earned.

She told the Financial Times newspaper: 'I put everything in the show, and I actually went bankrupt after the first extension of the 'Monster Ball'. And it was funny because I didn't know! And I remember I called everybody and said, 'Why is everyone saying I have no money? This is ridiculous, I have five number one singles' - and they said, 'Well, you're $3 million in debt.' '
However, Gaga hasn't curbed her spending since her tour and reportedly recently sent minders to buy memorabilia from London of the British royal family to decorate her home with and remind her of her fans in England.
A source told the Daily Mirror newspaper: 'Gaga has sent her staff to London to spend £10,000 on Princess Diana and Prince William and Kate Middleton wedding memorabilia. She wants to set up a room in her New York apartment dedicated to London and all her precious Little Monsters over there.'
In addition to her extravagances, the 'Judas' singer has also been looking after her parents with her riches.
She said: 'The only big things I've purchased are my dad's heart valve and a Rolls-Royce for my parents, for their anniversary. And that was only because my dad had a Lady Gaga licence plate on our old car and it was making me crazy because he was getting followed everywhere, so I bought him a new car.'

Simon Cowell booed

London, May 31 (ANI): Music mogul Simon Cowell was booed by the audience on Britain's Got Talent over his sacking of Cheryl Cole.
The first of a week of BGT finals was the first time Cowell, 51, had been seen in public since he dashed 27-year-old Cole's dream of cracking America.

"The gossip before the show was all about Cheryl and Simon. People were reading The Sun and saying, 'Can you believe what he's done to poor Cheryl?'" the Sun quoted a source in the audience as saying.
"As soon as the warm-up guy said, 'Simon is in the building,' everyone suddenly started booing. People were saying, 'That's for Cheryl'," the source added. (ANI)

Cheryl Cole break

CHERYL Cole wants to take a break from the showbiz world.

The 27-year-old singer - who was sensationally sacked from the US version of 'The X Factor' after working on the show for just two weeks - is now keen to take some time off as she does not intend to return to the UK version of the musical talent programme.

A source said: "Cheryl has admitted she's not thinking straight right now and everything is a blur.

"She hasn't stopped working for the past nine years - ever since Girls Aloud started. She's now looking at this as the perfect opportunity to just stop for a bit and take time out.

"She's going to sit back, take stock of her career and decide what to do next."
Cheryl - who is thought to have been replaced on the judging panel, also containing Simon Cowell, L.A. Reid and Paula Abdul, by Nicole Scherzinger - reportedly did not want to return to the UK version of 'The X Factor' because she is feeling "fragile" about the sacking.

A source added to The Sun newspaper: "She just isn't in the right state of mind at the moment to go headfirst into a new show.

"She's all over the place, emotionally she's very fragile. Starting filming on Wednesday would be far too soon."

She has also become "un-contactable" after the event, with TV executives left in the dark about whether or not she wanted a job in the UK.

An insider told the Daily Mail newspaper: "Cheryl will not be returning to the British 'X Factor'. People have been trying to speak to her and persuade her this would be a good idea, but she's been un-contactable.

"She hasn't returned phone calls. And you can't exactly negotiate with someone who won't even speak to you."

Cougar town name change

LOS ANGELES, Calif. -- "Cougar Town" might be getting a name change.
Members of the show's cast and crew confirmed on Twitter over the weekend that they are once again considering renaming the Courteney Cox fronted sitcom in an attempt to woo viewers put off by the show's title.
"Ok. Guys. New title suggestions for CougarTown? I think [showrunner Bill Lawrence] is really seriously gonna do it this time," Busy Philipps, who plays one of Courteney's best friend's on the series, Laurie, Tweeted on Friday.
"Honestly, I think if you change it, it should be totally different. Not even reminiscent of Cougartown," she
continued, addressing Lawrence. "Go for it! Seriously."
Although some of his Tweet's have since been deleted, Lawrence suggested over the weekend on his own Twitter account (@VDOOZER) that the show needs more viewers to survive next season and he fears the current show name is putting off potential watchers.
"the title suggests [a] show they would hate," he wrote.
Dozens of fans contributed suggestions to help the cause over the weekend.
One option already getting the thumbs up from fans was "Friends with Beverages," a nod to both Cox's former NBC comedy and the large quantities of wine the gang consumes during each episode of "Cougar Town."
AH Nation Poll: Should 'Cougar Town' Change Its Name To 'Friends With Beverages'?
Meanwhile, Christa Miller, formerly of "Scrubs," who plays Ellie, Courteney's other best friend on "Cougar Town" (and is married to Lawrence), had a suggestion of another kind.
"I think the show should be called, 'Color Me Christa,'" she wrote.

Energy drinks kids

Pediatricians Warning :Energy Drinks Not for Kids

MONDAY, May 30 (HealthDay News) -- Although sports drinks and energy drinks are marketed heavily toward children and teens, a leading association of pediatricians is sounding the alarm about these beverages for kids.
Young children and teens should avoid energy drinks entirely, the American Academy of Pediatrics said in a report issued Monday, and routine consumption of sports drinks should be limited or eliminated.
"There's no place for energy drinks for kids," said report co-author Dr. Marcie Beth Schneider, an adolescent physician in Greenwich, Conn.
"There's a place for sports drinks, but that place is very specific."
Energy drinks include such popular brands as Red Bull, AMP and Rockstar and tend to be heavily caffeinated, potentially having several times the level of caffeine found in a cup of coffee. Manufacturers often add sugar and herbal stimulants such as guarana and taurine to the drinks, which are popular among kids.
The caffeine and herbal stimulants found in energy drinks can be dangerous to kids, the researchers noted. Some cans or bottles of energy drinks, in fact, may contain more than 500 mg of caffeine, which is equivalent to the caffeine found in 14 cans of caffeinated soda, according to Schneider.
The caffeine in energy drinks can lead to high blood pressure, high heart rate and insomnia, said Schneider. The other ingredients can boost the power of the caffeine, she said, adding that the drinks will have a greater effect on children because they're smaller than adults.
"Kids don't need to have this," she said. "This is not something they should be drinking."
Schneider declined to identify any energy drinks that may be better than others for kids who insist on drinking them. If kids use energy drinks because they're tired, she said, they should get more rest instead of chugging caffeine. "It's not a solution," she said.
The manufacturer of Red Bull defended its drink, saying a can has about as much caffeine as a cup of coffee and includes ingredients that European health officials have declared to be safe. However, users of energy drinks may chug them more quickly than they would hot coffee because they're served cold.
The authors of the current report and a study published in the journal Pediatrics last February pointed to statistics that showed about half of the nation's 5,448 reported caffeine overdoses in 2007 were in people under age 19, although it's not known how many of the cases were the result of energy drink consumption.
The study also reported that many teens consider energy drinks and sports drinks interchangeable, which they are not.
Sports drinks like Gatorade -- designed to replace water and electrolytes lost through sweating during exercise -- have been around for decades, but they now come in a wider selection of flavors and types. The report raps them for coming with too many calories and potentially boosting the risk of obesity, weight gain and dental erosion. Most kids will do just fine drinking water instead, Schneider said.
However, "kids who are doing a lot of vigorous aerobic activity can benefit from sports drinks," she said. "For the rest of the crowd, it certainly doesn't need to be served at lunch. We want kids to be focusing on water and calcium."
If kids insist on sports drinks, Schneider said there are low-calorie types to consider.
The report appears in the May 30 issue of the journal Pediatrics.
Dr. David Weldy, an assistant professor of family medicine at the University of Toledo, said he hasn't seen young patients report problems due to energy drinks, and he acknowledged that direct evidence saying that they're harmful is lacking.
"There isn't a whole lot of research into these things," Weldy said.
But the drinks do seem to keep kids from sleeping and cause concentration problems, he said, and they may also dangerously boost the heart rate.
Weldy said that doctors should talk to kids about both energy and sports drinks as part of discussions about nutrition. "It should be part of the conversation a lot more," he said.

Rainer Fassbinder

Film Director
b. May 31, 1945
d. June 10, 1982
“I’d like to be for cinema what
Shakespeare was for theatre, Marx for politics and Freud for psychology: someone after whom nothing is as it used to be.”

Actor, director and screenwriter Rainer Fassbinder made over 40 films in his 15-year career.  He is among the most important figures in New German Cinema.
Born in the small Bavarian town of Bad Wörishofen, Fassbinder was raised by his mother. Her long hours at work left Fassbinder to occupy himself, which he did by going to the cinema. “The cinema was the family life I never had at home,” he said.
Leaving school before taking his final exams, Fassbinder immersed himself in film.  He made his first short films at age 20, persuading an older lover to finance and act in them.
In 1967, Fassbinder joined a radical theater troupe in Munich. He directed and acted in productions with Peer Raben, Kurt Raab, Hanna Schygulla and Irm Hermann, who became regulars in Fassbinder productions. The next year, Fassbinder directed “Katzelmacher,” his first play.
Fassbinder’s most prolific years as a director, writer and actor in film, theater, television and radio began in 1969. On average, he released one film every hundred days.
A major theme of his work focuses on the individual’s tragic longing for love. Among his popular films are “Love Is Colder Than Death” (1969), “Ali: Fear Eats the Soul” (1973) and “I Only Want You to Love Me” (1976).  Often considered his best work, “Berlin Alexanderplatz” (1980) was a 15-hour television drama.
Several Fassbinder films deal with homosexuality, a taboo subject for major directors of the time. Films such as “Querelle” (1982) and “The Bitter Tears of Petra von Kant” (1971) focus on gays and lesbians as societal outsiders.
Fassbinder’s radical behavior, drug and alcohol addiction, frequent public appearances in the New York City leather scene, and violent relationships with lovers, both male and female, were followed in tabloids and gossip columns.
At age 37, Fassbinder died from an overdose of drugs and alcohol. His death marked the end of New German Cinema.

Good Night.

You can cry and get upset. You can think the world is over and there's no hope. But end the feelings that very night and start fresh the next day. Life's short! :)

May 30th,Bertrand Delanoë, Gay Mayor of Paris

b. May 30, 1950

“Any time there are Parisians fighting for more freedom ... I’m with them.”

In 2001 when Bertrand Delanoë was elected mayor of Paris, the city became the world’s largest to have an openly gay mayor. In March 2008, he won reelection.

Delanoë grew up in Tunisia, a French colony at the time. His first political interest came during the Battle of Bizerte. Watching as French soldiers opened fire on Arab citizens, he felt that “an Arab should be equal to a Frenchman.” Delanoë claims it is because of colonialism that he began to identify with the left.
During his days at the Université de Toulouse, where he graduated with a degree in economics, Delanoë became involved in politics and joined the Socialist Party. At the age of 23, he was elected deputy secretary of the Aveyron Socialist Federation. Between 1973 and 2001, Delanoë held various political positions, including national secretary of the Socialist Party and member of the Paris City Council.

As mayor of Paris, Delanoë pushed an agenda for change. In an effort to reduce city traffic and pollution, Delanoë started a low-cost program that encourages Parisians to rent bikes. He worked to provide more affordable housing to encourage economically disadvantaged people to stay in the city.
In October 2002, Delanoë was stabbed. His assailant told police he targeted Delanoë because of his homosexuality.

Despite France’s political tradition of keeping one’s personal life out of the public, Delanoë came out in a French television interview in 1998. In his book, “La vie, passionnément” (“Life, Passionately”) (2004), Delanoë says he made that decision because he thought it could help, even if in a small way, “lighten the burden of secrecy borne by so many people.” On the topic of gay marriage Delanoë writes, “In the name of what can one reject this demand for equality?”

Correct Ways to Display the American Flag

?
Correct Ways to Display the American Flagthumbnail
Correct Ways to Display the American Flag
The United States Flag Code dictates many of the correct ways to display the American flag. It also carries information on incorrect ways to display and handle the flag. The code states that the flag, as the representative symbol of a living country, should be treated as a living thing and cared for as such. The United States Flag Codes determines certain rules for displaying the American flag indoors, outdoors, at ceremonies, on parade and at government buildings.

  1. Inside

    • Indoors, the flag should be flown with the union (the blue field) to the flag's right and the observer's left. The same rule applies as a flag faces outdoors inside of a window.

    At Night

    • The flag must be properly illuminated if flown at night. Otherwise, it is only to be displayed from sunrise to sunset.

    Outside

    • When hung over a street, the flag should be flown with the union pointing toward the north or the east, depending on the direction of the street.

    With Other Flags

    • With other flags, the American flag is to be flown in the center and at the highest point. If the flags represent other nations, they may be flown at the same height as the American flag.

    Misconceptions

    • The American flag should never be displayed as clothing, bedding, or drapery. It should also not cover a ceiling, or be flown on the same staff as advertising banners or flags.

    Warning

    • The code stipulates that the flag is never allowed to touch the ground. It is to be raised briskly and lowered ceremoniously.

    Fun Fact

    • The flag should never be flown upside-down or backwards, except in the case of emergency. In normal times, an upside-down flag would symbol disrespect, but in emergency it can act as a distress signal.

May 29th, Bishop Gene Robinson

b. May 29, 1947
“It’s not so much a dream as a calling from God.”

In 2003, The Rt. Rev.V. Gene Robinson was elected bishop of the diocese of New Hampshire, making him the first openly gay Episcopal bishop. His ordination caused a global rift within the Episcopal Church and led to international debate about the inclusion of gay clergy in church hierarchy. In the weeks leading up to his consecration, Robinson received hate mail and death threats, triggering the FBI to place him under 24-hour protection.

Gene Robinson grew up outside Lexington, Kentucky. The son of poor tobacco sharecroppers, he was raised without running water or indoor plumbing. He recalls his childhood as rustic and religious, with Sunday school and services at a small Disciples of Christ congregation.

Robinson earned his bachelor’s degree in American studies from the University of the South and his Master of Divinity from the Episcopal General Theological Seminary in New York. He was ordained a priest in 1973.

Despite doubts about his sexual orientation, Robinson married in 1972. He and his wife moved to New Hampshire where they raised two daughters. Robinson worked as youth ministries coordinator for the seven dioceses of New England and cofounded the national Episcopal Youth Event. Robinson divorced his wife and came out in the mid-1980’s.

Robinson is the coauthor of three AIDS education curricula. In Uganda, he helped set up a national peer counseling program for AIDS educators working with religious institutions.

The National Gay and Lesbian Task Force honored Robinson with a Leadership Award in 2004.  In 2007, he received the Flag Bearer Award from Parents and Friends of Lesbians and Gays (PFLAG) for leadership and inclusion in faith communities.

In 2008, Bishop Robinson and Mark Andrew, partners for more than 19 years, exchanged vows in a civil union ceremony in New Hampshire.

If I were to nominate a certain year as the busiest time of my life, I guess it would be 2011. If I were to also nominate a certain year where I learned, improved and matured a lot, it would also be 2011. Huge things are happening in my life, and I cannot be more thankful to Allah for drilling me in His very own hard way.

I need some air to breathe though, so I've decided to cut down my activities. I will only be focusing on Up and a new business, and I guess I'll skip any new events or projects except ones I have committed to. I just wanna take things easy...:)

Btw, Dashboard Confessional is my favorite band. Just saying.

And oh, I attended Jakarta Highland Gathering today...so cool! :D

May 29th: Melissa Etheridge, Singer

b. May 29, 1961
“What do they know about this love anyway?”

Melissa Etheridge is a Grammy and Academy Award-winning singer and songwriter. She came out at the 1993 Triangle Ball, the Clinton administration’s inaugural gala for gays and lesbians, when she exclaimed, “Gee, I’m really excited to be here, and I’m really proud to have been a lesbian all my life!”
She was born in Leavenworth, Kansas, and studied at The Berklee School of Music in Boston. Etheridge moved to Los Angeles and evolved from a bluesy sound to her renowned rock/alternative style.

Etheridge shot to stardom with her trademark blues-rock hit “Come to My Window,” for which she received a Grammy Award in 1994 for Best Female Rock Vocal Performance. With its powerful lyrics, the song became an anthem for gay rights.

In 2004, Etheridge was diagnosed with breast cancer. At the 2005 Grammy Awards, she gave one of her most memorable performances with Janis Joplin’s hit, “Piece of My Heart.” She exposed her head, left bald from chemotherapy.

Etheridge’s songs have not only entertained, but have helped heal in times of tragedy. Her songbook includes “Scarecrow,” a tribute to Matthew Shepard; “Tuesday Morning,” dedicated to the memory of Mark Bingham, a hero of 9/11; “Four Days,” about those devastated by Hurricane Katrina; and “I Run for Life,” an anthem for breast cancer survivors.

Julie Cypher, Etheridge’s long-term ex-partner, gave birth to their two children. After their breakup, Etheridge exchanged vows with actress Tammy Lynn Michaels. In 2006, Michaels had twins.

In 2006, Etheridge received the Gay and Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation (GLAAD) Stephen F. Kolzak Award, which honors openly lesbian, gay, bisexual or transgender media professionals who have made a significant difference in promoting equal rights for the community. “I Need to Wake Up,” featured in the film “An Inconvenient Truth,” won an Academy Award for Best Original Song (2007).

Niecy Nash married

When Dancing With the Stars alum Niecy Nash walks down the aisle later this summer, don't expect any over-the-top diva antics.
The 40-year-old Nash says she doesn't even have a "bride gene" in her body.
"I really have no idea [how to plan a wedding]," Nash admits to UsMagazine.com ahead of her May 28 wedding to Jay Tucker. "Some women have been planning their wedding since they were 3-years-old, but I never put a sheet on my head and pretended it was a veil."
Despite announcing her engagement in September, Nash tells Us she stalled when it comes to planning her big day.

"All I have is a gainfully employed black man who loves me," she jokes of Tucker, her beau of just over one year. "I have maybe 115 days to get it all together. The first time I got married, I had folding chairs in my reception hall and a Styrofoam heart as a centerpiece for the table. There was a beautiful sign written in calligraphy that said 'Congratulations' on construction paper."
Nash knows she's got some catching up to do to outdo pal Sherri Shepherd, who got engaged in December.
"I'm getting married in May, she's getting married in August and yet she has more done than I do," says Nash, who enlisted her pal's help as one of her 10 bridesmaids. "It's been especially nice to go through these good times together, but I've got to get my own ideas. She'll show up to my wedding and it'll be her own ideas. I can't do that!"
Nash says her TLC special -- which will chronicle her wedding preparations and actual walk down the aisle -- came out of a desire to stay connected to her fans, along with getting planning advice.
"They have been so wonderful with passing along some of their business," Nash explains of the response she received after posting a notice on her website for support. "The main thing I want women to know is that you can get a second chance. You can get a do-over. Through this show, I want to tell them that the first time you fall in love doesn't have to be the last time."

Ana Ortiz pregnant

LOS ANGELES, Calif. -- Congratulations are in order for Ana Ortiz - the actress is six months pregnant with her second child.
"We know it's a boy," Ana revealed in an E-mail to Latina.com on Thursday evening of her second impending arrival with husband Noah Lebenzon. "[We] are trying to come up with some names that we can agree on.
The former "Ugly Betty" star said she wants to choose a baby name that will reflect her heritage.
"It has to be Spanish," she wrote. "But something non-speakers can pronounce without mauling."
Additionally, the 40-year-old actress, who recently inked a multi-episode deal to guest star on HBO's "Hung" alongside sexy series star Thomas Jane, said her pregnancy will not disrupt her new character's storyline.
"They are shooting around it," Ana explained, adding that she has filmed five episodes of the comedy so far. "It's been an interesting journey."

As previously reported on AccessHollywood.com, Ana married musician Noah Lebenzon in June 2007.
She announced her first pregnancy in January 2009, and gave birth to a baby girl, Paloma Louise Lebenzon, the following June.
"She is glowing and really elated," a rep for the star told Access Hollywood at the time. "Everything is great! And [the] baby is beautiful."

John Travolta tribute Conaway

John Travolta remembers tragic actor Jeff Conaway as a “wonderful and decent man”.
The Hollywood star paid tribute to his former co-star after Jeff’s death was announced yesterday.
The two actors starred alongside each other in cult classic Grease in 1978.
John played the iconic role of Danny Zuko , which turned him into an international star, while Jeff appeared as one of his ‘T-Bird’ gang members.

“Jeff Conaway was a wonderful and decent man, and we will miss him. My heartfelt thoughts are with his family and loved ones at this very difficult time," John told American publication E! News.
Jeff died aged 60 after his family decided to take him off life support following doctors’ advice that the situation was “hopeless”.
The actor had been in a medically induced coma after he was found unconscious at his home earlier this month.
Celebrity Rehab star Jeff had fallen ill with pneumonia and sepis while recovering from recent back surgery.
He had also been struggling with alcohol and drug addiction.

Soap giant Dove accused of racism

Soap giant Dove accused of racism after an advert for one of its products
London, May 25 (ANI): Soap giant Dove has been accused of racism after an advert for one of its products appeared to suggest it can change a user's skin colour.
The promotion, for Dove VisibleCare Creme Body Wash, features a "before" and "after" skin chart behind a black woman, possibly a Latina and a blonde - all wrapped in towels - standing beside each other.
The caption read: "Visibly more beautiful skin from the most unexpected of places - your shower."

Critics accused Dove of implied, and albeit unintentional, racism, but the firm confirmed that the advert is genuine.
"The ad is intended to illustrate the benefits of using Dove VisibleCare Body Wash, by making skin visibly more beautiful in just one week," the Daily Mail quoted it as saying.
"All three women are intended to demonstrate the 'after' product benefit. We do not condone any activity or imagery that intentionally insults any audience," it added. (ANI)

John Amaechi, Professional basketball player

b. May 29, 1947
Professional basketball player
“I am gay, black, British …
and I am now asserting my activism.”
“It was absolutely my ultimate goal to play in the NBA,” says Amaechi. In 1995, his dream became reality.

John Amaechi is the first NBA player to speak publicly about being gay. In 2007, three years after retiring from pro basketball, he became one of only six male professional athletes in the four major U.S. sports to come out.
Esera Tuaolo, an NFL player who came out in 2002, said of Amaechi, “What John did is amazing. He does not know how many lives he’s saved by speaking the truth.”
Amaechi, the son of a Nigerian father and a white British mother, grew up in England. When he started playing basketball at 16, his right hand was nearly severed in an accident. As a result, Amaechi became ambidextrous, which helped him become a better basketball player. Amaechi played basketball at Penn State University, where he was twice selected a First Team Academic All-American.
“It was absolutely my ultimate goal to play in the NBA,” says Amaechi. In 1995, Amaechi’s dream became reality. He played for the Cleveland Cavaliers, followed by the Orlando Magic and the Utah Jazz. In 2000, Amaechi made headlines when he turned down a $17 million offer from the Los Angeles Lakers. Opting to stay in Orlando earning $600,000 a year, Amaechi remained loyal to the Magic, who hired him when no other team would.
Amaechi’s memoir, “Man in the Middle” (2007), explores the challenges he faced as a closeted professional athlete.
After the NBA, Amaechi returned to Britain, where he turned to television sportscasting and covered the 2008 Beijing Olympics for the BBC. In Beijing, Amaechi also served as a human rights ambassador for Amnesty International. He appeared on several episodes of “Shirts & Skins,” a Logo reality series, where he mentored a gay basketball team and shared his experiences as an out athlete.
Amaechi owns Amaechi Performance Systems. He is a psychologist with a management consulting company specializing in workplace diversity and workplace climate and culture challenges.
Amaechi established the ABC Foundation, which builds sports centers in Britain and encourages children’s involvement in sports and their communities.
