Forum told rehab centres need to be expanded

Canberra community forum has been told that drug treatment treatment facilities in the ACT need to be expanded to meet the growing demand for rehabilitation services.

The Alcohol and other Drugs Council works with Canberra's Karralika Centre to provide support for adults and families affected by drugs.

The Council's executive officer, David Templeman, says at the moment Karralika has only 44 funded beds.

"That's been the case since 1989 and we need to actually increase that to at least about 100," he said.

"And why? Because we're facing a continual demand of approximately on average of between 50 and 60 individuals and families who are trying to enter the program."
